Creation of The Universe

It was contended by the Europeans that Muhammad ((sallallaho alaihi wasallam)) drew his inspirations from the Bible. I have already proved that the Quranic verses are super human and there is a standing challenge till the Hour to mankind and Jinn to even produce even three verses like that of the Quran.

Secondly the biblical (13) cosmogony given into book of Genesis stands in contradiction to the modern ideas on the formation of the universe, for example allegory of the primordial waters is hardly tenable, nor is the creation of light on the first day before the creation of star (on the fourth day) which produce this light. And the creation of sun and moon on the fourth day after the creation of the planet earth, when it is a fact that our planet earth comes from its own star the Sun.

But the holy Quran is free from any such ambiguity which may stand in tussle with the modern scientific thoughts. The Quran telling us about the creation of the universe said:

Lo! your Lord is Allah who created the heaven and the earth in six days. and is firmly established on the throne (of authority).” (7/54)

“God Who created the earth and the high heavens. “ (20/4)

Unlike the narration contained in the Bible, the Quran does not lay down a sequence from the creation of the heavens and the earth. It refers to both the heavens and the earth, and the earth before the heavens. In fact, the notion to be derived from the Quran is one of concomitance in celestial and terrestrial evolutions. The day referred, here are ages of stages. Please see 70/4 see margin 14.

The Quran telling about the primeval origin said:

“Have not those who disbelieved known that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation) before We clove them asunder? We made every living thing from water will they not then believe?” (21/30)

And the Quran said:

Say (Muhammad unto the idolater) Disbelieve ye verily in Him Who created the earth in two days and ascribe ye unto rivals? He (and none else) is the Lord of the world. He set on (the earth) mountains standing firm rising above it, and blessed it and measured there in its sustenance in four days, alike for all who ask; Then turned He to the heaven when it was smoke, and said unto it and unto the earth; Come both of you willingly or loath. They said: We come obedient. Then He ordained them seven heavens in two Days and inspired in each heaven its mandate; and We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and rendered it inviolable. Such is the decree of (Him). The exalted in might, the Knower. (41/9-12)

From the above verses it is evident that the heaven and earth were (ratq) conjoined and the heaven was smoke, and therefore, the earth was also smoke, and the smoke is defined in science as solid particles suspended in air, so Allah separated them (fafataqna huma), that is to say that the heaven and the earth were both gaseous mass.

All this Quranic description is in perfect agreement with modern science on the existence of primary nebula and the process of secondary separating of the element that had formed the initial unique mass. This separation resulted in the formation of galaxies, which were divided into solar systems by their creator.

Quran also refers to intermediary creation between the heavens and the earth:

“He who created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between, In six days…(25/59)

The above revelation refers to the simultaneous creation of the heaven and the earth, and all that in between in six days. After separation from the gaseous mass, the process of the completion of the earth was occurring at one hand and the process of the formation of the heavens and stars was taking place on the other.

The days referred in the revelation should not be considered twenty four hour day resulting from the axial rotation of the earth, because when the earth was separated from the gaseous mass the twenty four hour’s day did not exist.* Further Allah exemplifies a Day, “The measure whereof is as fifty thousand years.” (70/4): It is, therefore, logical to think of six days as six stages or phases. The apparent association of six days to seven day week, led to a notion in the book of genesis that God, “On the seventh day ceased from all his work.” To work or to cease from work are the animal qualities, which cannot be attributed to God. He is free from all animal qualities. All the animal qualities are quite alien (15) to God.

The sixth stages of creation mentioned by Quran do not stand in contrast to the modern scientific notions. It is considered:

(a) That the first stage is the cleaving asunder of the gaseous mass nucleus. It was intensely hot because of the density, the scattering of the content over the vast space lowered such intensity.

(b) The second stage is, likely, further cooling and condensing as Allah created the autumns of all the elements internalizing the electrostatic forces to keep the nuclear balance till the end of the universe. The creation of Ozone layer radiation belts canopy, the moisture in the atmosphere raining down on the hot liquid mass all done by Allah’s command to further cool the earth so that hot liquid mass is enveloped by 10 to 15 miles layer of solid crust. It should be noted that the radius of the earth from the center to the top of the crust is 4000 miles approximately. The surface rocks fall in three categories. The continents are made of limestone, granite and basalt. We get a reference to it in the Holy Quran:

“And in mountains are tracts of white and red, of diverse hues and raven black” (35/27)

The white is limestone, the red is granite and the raven black is the basalt. The ocean bed is mostly basalt, raven black also refers to black igneous rocks.

These may be the two days mentioned in the verse 41/9. In this connection, there is theory of Plate Tectonics and Continental Drift. The continental masses although solid are lighter than the liquid magna and were floating on it. It is speculated that the continental plates were together, then split and drifted apart.

The continental drift theory is not acceptable due to the following reason:

  1. The cooling, condensing, and axial rotation will make for the distribution of the continental masses around the globe rather than conglomeration on one spot.
  2. The surface hardening into a solid crust will fix the position of the continental mass in relation to solid basalt layer and
  3. Drifting and splitting of the continental mass is scientist’s notion and based on accidental phenomena whereas creation of the heaven and the earth is well planned as God said:

Thou canst see no fault in the Beneficent One’s creation, Then look again: canst thou see any flaw. Then look again and yet again thy sight will return into thee dull and discomfited in a state worn out. (47/3, 4)

The third to the sixth stages i.e. four days referred to in the verse 41/10 very aptly matches with the four eras of geological history. The Proterozoic, (first life), the Palaeozoic (ancient) life, the Mesozoic (middle life), and the Cainozoic (modern life). Special mountain formation and transformation of the land and development of life forms mark each of these periods.

There was no room to mutation, adaptation, and natural selection as conceived by Darwin in evolution or development of life forms. I have refuted him in another chapter of this book.

The creation of heaven and earth was contemporaneous. In the same period of time, Allah created seven firmaments and adorned the lower heaven with lights, i.e. galaxies with their solar system. In the verse 41/2 Allah said, “unto the heavens and unto the earth: come both of you willingly or loath. They said we come obedient.” There is no wonder in Allah’s calling to the heaven and the earth because they are not dead bodies to their Creator and their calling to obedience means to act to His will and plan.

Even in the Psalms of David (148-3, 4), we get:

Praise Him sun and moon

Praise Him all you shining stars

Praise Him heaven of heavens.

Similarly, there are various narrations that stones, trees and animals talked with the Holy Prophet. In a narration from Ali bin Abi Talib that he went with the Prophet in some of the suburbs of Makkah and from wherever they passed the stones, the trees, and the mountains said, ‘peace be upon you O the Prophet of Allah’. (Abu Noaim, Al Baihaqui).

Lo! We (Allah) subdued the hill to hymn the praises (of their Lord) with him (David) at nightfall and sunrise. (38/18)

All that is in the heaven and the earth glorifies Allah; He is the Mighty the Wise. (57/1) So we did see that the Quranic facts about the creation of the universe are held correct by the scientists and not the Biblical version about the universe.
