Testimony: The Bodily ascent of the Prophet Muhammad

TESTIMONY 13 SOLOMON’S MIRACLES IN QURAN TESTIFY TO THE BODILY ASCENT OF THE PROPHET (Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam)

God subdued the winds for Solomon: And unto Solomon (We subdued) the wind, whereof its morning course was a month’s journey and the evening course a month’s journey. (34/12)

God subdued the winds for Solomon, and it took him on month’s journey in morning flight and likewise he could cover a month’s journey in an evening. The orientalists who denied the bodily ascent of the Prophet also denied the peculiar power given to Solomon. However, the Quran announced that Solomon use to fly a month’s journey in morning and could as much distance in an evening, not alone but along with his troops. Thus, Allah made the solid body to travel in space by subduing the winds to the order of Solomon. A great miracle with which Allah blessed Solomon.

The Quran mentioned another miracle of Solomon in its chapter ‘The Ant’. Solomon was given power over mankind, Jinn and even birds were made subservient to him. One day he missed the hoopoe from the muster. However, he came back before long and informed Solomon of the Queen Sheba (Arabic=Saba). She ruled a big territory of Yemen, Hadharmout and Ethopia. She and her people were pagans who worshipped the heavenly bodies, the sun, the planets, and the stars. Solomon sent a letter to her directing her not to be arrogant and surrender herself. She sent precious present, which Solomon sent back and gave her last warning. Meanwhile Solomon was informed that she had left and coming to meet him. Solomon demanded in his court that who would bring her throne to him before she reached to him in submission:

A stalwart of the Jinn said: I will bring it to thee before thou rise from thy place. Verily I am strong

and trustworthy for such work. One with whom was the knowledge of the Scripture said: I will bring it to thee within a twinkle of an eye. (27/39-40)

Imam Razi said: “The man with the knowledge of Scripture was Solomon himself. Who else would have better knowledge of God’s Book than the prophet...It was done to guide her to the omnipotence of God and the prophet-hood of Solomon (alaihi alsalam).”

However, the throne was placed before Solomon in no time:

And when he saw it set in his presence, he said:

This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I give thanks or an ungrateful. (27/40)

Solomon’s saying: ‘This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me...’ proves that it was he who had that great knowledge of the Book of Allah which could move the solid objects like the throne of Bilqis to thousands of miles in a twinkling of an eye.

Therefore, when a prophet could move a solid object to thousands of miles only with the knowledge that Allah had given him why one should disbelieve that Allah Himself carried away the body of the Prophet (S.A.W) to seven heavens? No doubt, ‘Who carried His slave by night’ means it was Him, the Omnipotent who carried away His Prophet in body and soul by night to Bait al Maqdis and seven heavens. (See Testimony 3)

The Quran said: The Grace of Allah toward thee hath been infinite. Certainly, the Grace of Allah over the Prophet (S.A.W) hath been eminent. If Solomon was favoured with subduing of the winds for him, the people (ummah) of Muhammad (S.A.W) have also been favoured with this kindness. They fly from place to place. As if, the miracle of Solomon was pointing to the subduing of winds for the people at large in future. Similarly, if Solomon was favoured with presenting the throne of Bilqis before himself in twinkling of an eye, Muhammad (S.A.W) was honoured to cross bodily the distance of millions of light years and shown the wonders of seven heavens in a portion of a night.

No doubt, the Grace of Allah over the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) excelled over all the other prophets.

TESTIMONY 14 THE LIVING PROOF OF THE QURAN. THE HEAVENLY BODIES AND THE BODILY ASCENT.

Now it is a known truth to the scientists that all the celestial bodies are floating. The planet Earth has double rotation, axial, and orbital. Its axial rotation causes day and night and its orbital rotation along with its axis making an angle of 23.270 cause’s changes in seasons and climate. It completes its orbital rotation in 365 days and 5 hours 48 minutes and 46 seconds. Our planet Earth is also floating in space like other heavenly bodies. The scientists could verily these facts only after thousand years of descent of the Quran. The Quran in 7th century had explained many scientific facts and floating of the celestial bodies in space. (See. Index, Stars and Planets, Celestial Bodies as In the Quran).

The Quran said:

And the sun runs its course in its appointed place. That is the decree of the Mighty and Wise. And for the moon We have appointed mansions till it return like an old shriveled date stalk. It is not for the sun to catch up the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit. (36/38-39)

The above Quranic verses state the rotation of the sun on its axis, the enlarging and the reducing of the moon, the rotation of the night and the day and the floating of them all in their orbits.

The moon is known as the satellite of the earth, which revolves round the earth monthly at a mean distance of 238, 857 miles. It accompanies the earth in its annual orbital revolution about the sun. It is 2159.9 miles in diameter and its mass is 0.00123 of that of the earth. The monthly mansions of the moon occur as the revolving earth comes gradually in between the sun and the moon. The sunbeam reflects from over the earth on the surface of the moon, thus we see the gradual enlarging of its disc in its illumination, and then its decreasing. The moon disappears when it is totally behind the earth.

The Quran after mentioning the mansions of the moon, positively point out to the floating of each in their appointed orbits saying: ‘It is not for the sun to catch up the moon'.

After mentioning the sun and the moon, the Quran quite strikingly asserts: ‘Nor doth the night outstrip the day.’ This statement is in perfect relevance to the sun and the moon as the day and night occurs on our planet Earth. The sun causes the day and the moon illuminates during the night. Thus in 7th century, the Quran in a single verse stated great astronomical observation of the 17th century i.e. floating of the sun, moon and the earth including their axial and orbital rotation: “They float each in an orbit.” (See. The Quran said:

It is He who made the sun to glow and the moon a light, and appointed for her mansions, the ye might know the number of years and the reckoning (of time). (10/5)

In the aforesaid revelation Allah mentioned his solar system as the sun and the moon help in measuring the time. The mentions of the moon help us in determining the number of months and years. The lunar year is very important for the Muslims to keep up with the Islamic calendar, which includes the month of Ramadhan, the month of fasting, Eid, Haj, and paying of Zakat (=poor due). A great wisdom in appointing the lunar year is that the Muslims fasting months and Haj complete a cycle in all seasons within 36 years.

However, the Quran further pointed out:

Lo! The number of the months with Allah is 12 months, by Allah’s ordinance, the day He created the heavens and the earth...” (9/36)

The aforesaid revelation points out, that the counting of days, months and years began only, ‘The day He created the heavens and the earth’” Here the Arabic word ‘youm’ translated as day also means time. (Al Mawrid Arabic-English). That is to say, that only after the creation of the earth, reckoning of time in days, months and years began. That does away the objection of the orientalists who say the Quran speaks of the creation of the universe in six days. The six days referred therein are six stages as 24 hours days then did not exist. (See. The Creation of the Universe)

Pointing the difference between solar and lunar year, the Quran said:

‘And it is said they tarried in their cave three hundred years and add nine,” (18/25)

The aforesaid revelation refers to the 7 sleepers of ‘Ephesus’. A Roman Emperor (Decius) 149-151 persecuted Christians. These seven ran away and took refuge in a cave of nearby mountain. There they slept. It was said, they slept 300 years (solar year). The Quran converted these solar years into lunar years used by Arab, as 300 solar years are equal to 309 lunar years.

Imam Razi defining the verse ‘they tarried in their cave three hundred years and add nine said: “Why it did not say three hundred and nine years? Instead it said ‘and add nine’. The merit in saying it is, that the period of time was said to be 300 solar years and it comes to same if we add nine lunar years (in the figure of 300).

However, the Quran did not confirm the hearsay narrative of 300 solar years but it brushed it off saying:

Allah is best aware how long they tarried.

Reverting back to our subject we know that the day and night occur due to the revolution of the earth in its axis and its axis being bent to an angle of 23.270 causes the change in seasons. Thus, we count months and years and undergo the four seasons, which form the basis of production.

The Quran emphasizing the revolution of the earth said:

And thou seest the mountains thou deemest them motionless but they are flying with the flight of clouds. The creation of Allah who perfected all things. (27/88)

Few commentators have wrongly interpreted the aforesaid verse referring it to Doomsday, and said that flying of mountains shall occur before Resurrection. But the verse did not refer to Doomsday. To the contrary, it refers to the creation of God and its perfection. The word ‘saufa’ in Arabic is used to show the remote future, the Quran here used the present simple. That stated the present state of the mountains, though they look firmly fixed on earth but in fact they are flying like thin summer clouds. That is to say that this terrestrial globe along with everything on it is flying in its orbit. Our science confirming to its velocity held:

That the distance of the sun from the earth is 93 million miles. The velocity of the earth on its orbit is 18.5 miles per second. (Encyclopedia of Science & Technology). Our planet earth traverses 66240 miles per hour. Round the year in its orbital motion, it traverses about 580,669,950 miles. The earth rotating on its axis at a speed of 1038 miles per hour completes its cycle in 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.9 seconds, which causes day and night. Whereas, the moon is revolving round the earth at speed of 2270 miles per hour. The moon is rotating on its axis at the speed of ten miles per hour. The earth is solid mass, its weight is (5.9 x 10) ^21 i.e. 5883 million million million tons whereas, the weight of the sun is (4x10)^ 31. That is to say that these celestial bodies with thousands of billion tons of weight are floating in the space.

It is that infinite power of creation of God which human mind could not conceive in 7th century. It is why the Quran said:

Assuredly, the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind; but most of mankind know not.(40/57)

The motion of the earth with its billions of tons of heavy weight in space is as good as flying of thin clouds on the wings of the wind. That is the reason that Creator the Great called its motion:

‘Flying with the flight of clouds’.

The flight of the earth in its orbit is that of an aeroplane flying in space. The passengers in it do not feel speed. The aeroplane is the small body; similarly, the earth in proportion to the vastness of the space around it is like a speck, we, therefore, do not feel it moving. Many celestial bodies moving swiftly change their places, yet we do not see them moving. We can observe their motion only with a powerful telescope in an observatory.

Allah, the Sublime, the Supreme, mentioned the axial rotation of the earth saying: Lord of the east and the west, there is no God but He. (73/9)

Because the axial rotation with its angle causes the rising and setting of the sun from different places, so He said:

He is Lord of the two easts and Lord of the two wests. (55/17)

The two easts and the two wests are the two extreme points from where the sun rises and sets during a year. They are caused due to its orbital motion and of its axis being bent to 23.270, thus the rising and setting places under go slight change during the year.

It is also a known astronomical fact that the rising and setting of the sun is a constant phenomenon. The Quran explaining it said:

But Nay! I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that verily We are powerful. (70/40)

That is to say, that due to axial rotation, the rising and the setting of the sun is constantly happening, the parts where it rises and sets become easts and wests thus round the clock we have several easts and wests. This explains why the Quran used the plural speech.

Only Allah hath that infinite power of creation, which can revolve not only the earth but all the heavenly bodies. He said:

And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all between them in sport. (44/38)

‘All between them’ includes millions of the celestial bodies, and most of them are million times greater than earth. God has set in them a system that they do not collide each other. The floating of the millions of tons of weight in space certainly is not a fun, play or sport. What is between the heavens and the earth is an amazing vast space, and the earth in proportion to this vastness is not only a speck but the light of some stars reaches to our planets earth in millions of light years. Whereas the light travels 186,000 miles in a second. It is the reason the Quran declared it a very miraculous creation:

a) And of his miracles is the creation of the heaven and the earth, difference of your language and colors. (30/22

b) And of his Signs is this: The heaven and the earth stand by His command. (30/25)

Stand by his command means they keep to their functions.

c) Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Lo! therein indeed a Sign who believe. (29/44)

And how many Signs in the heavens and the earth they pass by with their face averted. (12/105)

The Arabic word ‘ayah’ in the revelation (a) above means, signs, portent, miracle, wonder and marvel. Certainly, the creation of universe is a very great miracle. Further, the Quran point to: ‘The difference of your languages and colors.’ (30/22) Is it not amazing that though mankind comes into one specie, yet they have been given hundred of different languages and various colors. We have seen under ‘The Quran and the Genetics’, that God created cell and gave its nucleus the genetic code to produce exactly to its kind. This is certainly wonders of wonder that human kind though under one category but the genetic code in the cell nucleus given us various shapes and colors and the child is born with full capability to pick up the language of his parents and of his fellow children.

In the revelation (b) above, the Quran declares that ‘Standing by of heaven and the earth to His command is a great Sign.” That is to say that the heaven and the heavenly bodies are keeping to their tracks and functioning as planned by their Creator. As the cell nucleus cannot cross the limit of its genetic code, in the same way the celestial bodies cannot detrack, from their orbits or change their axial rotation.

In revelation (c) above, the Quran invites attention of the believers and tells them that all these marvels of creation are enough to guide them to One Unique Creator and their Lord and the Lord of the worlds. As he made living cell beyond evolution, similarly everything He created demonstrates the artistry of its Creator and perfection in every creation.

‘There is no altering to the laws of God’s creation.’ (30/30)

Lastly, God is Omniscient of all things; He does not think or plan but says: ‘Be! And it is.’ (36/82)

The Quran said: “Let it be known, to Him is all the creation and commandment (for their continuance).” (VII-54)

SHAME TO QADIYANIS AND PERVEZIS

After discussing the enormous creations of celestial bodies from the Quran, we revert back to the denouncers of the miracles, who have denied the bodily ascent of the Prophet (sallallaho alaihi wasallam) and other miracles of the Quran.

If we tell them that the scientists say that our planet has a circumference of 40,075 kilometers, they will say it is perfectly all right. If we tell them, it has the double revolution, one on its axis and the other on its orbit; they will say it is true. If we inform them that this earth is running very swiftly in its orbit, they will echo it to be a fact. If we bring it into their notice that this earth with its billions of tons of weight, without any support is hanging like a balloon and traversing its course with a tremendous speed, they will held, there is no doubt in it. But when we tell them, God Who created it and other celestial bodies and made them to run in their orbits without putting in them any flying machines, He carried His Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (S.A.W) in body and souls to seven heavens, they would say it is not possible. It is because they have hearts but without vision, and they have eyes which perceive not, and ears which hear not the truth. Allah hath put a seal on them due to their insistence in infidelity.

The aforesaid astronomical facts do make us to conceive, that Allah Who is Keeping these tremendous heavenly bodies in motion, certainly carried His Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) in body and soul to seven heavens in a portion of a night. The celestial bodies are testifying to the Greatness of their Creator and His Omnipotence in carrying the light body of His Prophet Muhammad Mustafa, Ahmad Mujtaba, (S.A.W). No doubt, He is the doer of what He intends.

TESTIMONY 15. ALBURAQ AND THE MODERN MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION.

In most of the traditions about the ascent of the Prophet (S.A.W), we find that an animal named Al Buraq was brought for him. (Al Buraq, less than the mule but greater than the ass, it is called al Buraq because of the intense whiteness of his hue, and his great, brightness, Or because of quickness of his motion, in respect both of which he is likened to lightening. (Lanes’Lexicon).

The words used by the Prophet (S.A.W) to state its rapid velocity point out to an amazing fact. He said: “An animal was brought for me, bigger than the ass but less than a mule, it put its step to the utmost limit of eye...”

The word ‘Buraq’ is a derivative from the word ‘baraqa’, it means to lighten, to radiate. The latest findings tell us that speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. When the Prophet (S.A.W) said: “It put its step on the utmost limit of eye,” it meant that its velocity was more rapid than speed of light, because the extreme limit of our vision is sky, it is to say that ‘Buraq’ reached the sky by the wink of an eye. Certainly, such a mount was required to cross earth-sky distance. The scientists measure the distance of heavenly bodies from earth in light years. (See. Stars and Planets). In spite of having such a tremendous speed, the ‘Buraq’ was in control of Gabriel, that is why the Prophet (S.A.W) offered the supererogatory prayers in the blessed land of Al Medinah and then at Bethlehem (=the birth place of Jesus).

Gabriel’s angelic power was quite enough to take the Prophet of God (S.A.W) to Jerusalem and seven heavens, but a mount was sent to elevate his dignity and eminence.

In a report of Al Baihaqui from Saeed Al Khudri the Apostle of Allah (S.A.W) said: “I and Gabriel entered Bait al Maqdis each of us offered prayers, then I came to Meraj, the souls of the prophets used to ascend on it...”

Meraj means ladder and it also means the route of ascent. (Al Mawrid).

We know the sky is full of blazing stars etc., yet there must be some proper route to ascent to the heaven. Therefore, proper meaning of ‘I came to Meraj’, are that I came to the route of the ascent or Meraj may also mean a vertical ascent to heaven. This vertical ascent was on Al Buraq as described in most of the traditions.

THE BODY NEEDS A MOUNT IBN KATHIR.

Ibn Kathir writing the bodily ascent of the Prophet (S.A.W) in his commentary said: “God said: ‘(His) eye sight never swerved, nor did it go astray’, the eye sight is (an instrument to see) for the living being and not for the soul. Similarly he was carried on an intense white animal, shining bright, and verily (this ride) is for body and not for soul, because the soul does not require a mount to ride it on. ”

The rationalists made fun of ‘Buraq’ as a ride, but the 20th century scientific progress proved that it pointed out to the speedy transportation and vertical ascent in future as we have in rockets etc. The American space shuttle went round the earth at a speed of 17500 miles an hour. This speed is not even one third of the speed of the earth, which is traversing in the orbit at the speed of 66,240 miles per hour, (See. Testimony 14). One Who can give a very rapid velocity to the tremendous heavenly bodies, certainly made his Prophet to cross the earth-sky distance on a heavenly ride of Buraq in twinkling of an eye.

TESTIMONY 16. THE DETAILS OF THE BODILY ASCENT IN THE CHAPTER ‘AL NAJAM’ OF THE QURAN

The Quranic verses from ‘He was taught by one...to verily he saw the greatest signs of his Lord,’ (Ch:53), have been interpreted by the companions of the Prophet in two ways. This difference among Sahabas (=companions) have a specific touch in it. It is not due to contradiction of each other by their own opinions.

To offer the commentary of the Quran by ones’ own opinion is a tumult against Islam. I have denounced it in the Vol. I of this Book. See Who Is Fit to Give the Exegesis or The Inevitability of Hadith, pp.54 to 76, also see, ‘Refuting The Denouncers of Five Daily Prayers and Hadith, pp.159 to 180. See also Nabi Al Anbia Vol. I Ch: I

The task to elaborate the Quran was given to the Prophet (sallallaho alaihi wasallam).

Allah verily hath shown a great favour on the believers by sending unto them an Apostle from among them, who recited unto them His revelation and sanctify them, and teacheth them the Scripture and wisdom while before that they had been in manifest error. (3/164)

Both the groups of Sahabas, produce the Quran and Sunnah in support of their contention. First group state the bodily ascent of Prophet (S.A.W) up to the Lote Tree and that he saw their Gabriel in the real shape. But they say that the Prophet (S.A.W) did not see Allah by his eyes. The other group proving the bodily ascent holds that the Prophet (S.A.W) was honoured by having a sight on His Aspect.

The Quran said: He was taught by one mighty in power. (53/5)

The first group explained this revelation by referring to another verse of the Quran: Verily this (Quran) is from Allah, descended through a most honoured messenger. Endued with power, in the presence of the Lord of the Throne. (81/19-20)

Al Rabea said: ‘The Most honoured messenger refers to Gabriel. One most vigorous grew clear to view. (53/6)

‘Zoo Mirrah’, one most vigorous, said Mujahid, means endowed with power i.e. Gabriel. Qatada said; ‘zoo mirrah’ also refers to Gabriel being very handsome. We can say that Gabriel (alaihi alsalam) is most vigorous and handsome too. ‘Fastawa’ grew clear to view, it is Gabriel who grew clear to view.

When he was on the uppermost horizon. (53/7)

Abdullah bin Masud (radiallah anho) said: “The Prophet (S.A.W) did not see Gabriel in his real shape but only for two times, once he wished to see him in his real shape, so he saw him, and his body filled the horizon, the second time he saw him when he ascended with him, this is told in, ‘He grew clear to view, when he was on the uppermost horizon, verily he saw the greatest signs of his Lord. ‘It is seeing of Gabriel as he was created.”

In Testimony 9 (2), I have a already cited Syedah Aesha the mother of the believers (radhi allah anha) telling that the Prophet (S.A.W) saw Gabriel twice (in real shape), Once at Jiyad (Makkah), and secondly at the Lote Tree and that his body filled the horizon.

Then he drew near and came closer. Till He was at two bows length or even near (53/8-9)

The one who drew near and came closer to the Prophet (S.A.W) was Gabriel (alaihi alsalam), this is held by the mother of the faithfuls, Ibn Masud, Abu Zar, and Abu Hurairah (radhi allah anhum).

The mother of the believers Aesha (radhi allah anha) narrated: “In the beginning of the prophet-hood, the Prophet (S.A.W) saw Gabriel in dream. Then he came out for some requisite at Ajyad (Makkah), Gabreil called O Muhammad! O Muhammad! He saw right and left but did not see any thing, then he raised his eyes above, he saw him standing on one leg over the other filling the horizon. He said to pacify him. O Muhammad! (I am) Gabriel, the Prophet (S.A.W) ran away and stood among the people after that he did not see anything, then he left the people, and (stood alone). He saw him (again) It is told in the Chapter 81

Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; Nor doth he speak of (His own desire... Then he drew near and came closer. (Ch:53)

That is Gabriel who came closer to Muhammad (S.A.W). ‘Till he was (at a distance of) two bows length or even nearer. It is also said: ‘Al Qab’ is a distance of half finger, ‘And he revealed unto his slave which he revealed, ‘That is Gabriel revealed to the slave of His God. (Al Baihaqui, Al Dur al Manthur)

In a report of Imam Ahmad, Masruq asked Aesha (radhi Allah anha) when he was at her: Isn’t God said: Surely he beheld him on the clear horizon, And verily he saw him at another descent, she said: I am the first of this ummah (=people) who asked the Apostle of Allah about it.” He said: Verily he is Gabriel, ‘I did not see him in his original form save two occasion.’ ‘He saw him descending from the heaven to the earth filling the space in between the sky and the earth with his immense body.”

Abu Hurairah (radhi Allah anho) explaining: ‘And verily he saw him at another descent, ‘said: He saw Gabriel. (Muslim)

Adullah bin Masud (radhi Allah anho) narrated: The Prophet (S.A.W) saw Gabriel near the Lote Tree, having six hundred wings...” (Ibn Jarir).

However the above facts relate that the Prophet (S.A.W), saw Gabriel by his ocular vision in his original from at Lote Tree.

From the above it is evident that the above two verses under citation refer to the visioning of Gabriel in his actual form, but that does not negate the visioning of Allah by the Prophet as held by various scholars.

Imam Nawawi said: Aesha (radhi Allah anha) did not raise any tradition to negate the visioning (of Allah), we shall see it here below
